11kV Network Security
Customer Name: University of Hull

The Brief: The long term security of electrical supplies to the Cottingham Road campus is of paramount concern to the University of Hull. This vision of greater security included the replacement of ageing oil filled switchgear and transformers with modern, safer and more reliable variants.

The Solution: Through close contact with the University's engineering department, IUS were able to design a solution that would prioritise the replacement of key substations. Old 11kV oil insulated switchgear was replaced with new SF6 apparatus at Ferens Intake, Larkin and Fenner Substations plus transformers were replaced at the same locations. The project also included the addition of two new permanent substations at Ryton Theatre and Hardy Building as well as the addition of a temporary substation at the Library Building following flood damage during June 2007.

The Results: This extensive project has been completed over a number of years and much of the work was done during academic periods. Therefore the work had to be co-ordinated carefully to ensure the safety of the students around the campus as well as minimising power outages. The project was completed in early 2008 ahead of time and with minimal disruption to the students and staff of this large university campus.
